Absurd Sewn Selfies

The Absurd Sewn Selfies offer explorations into identity, ageing, disguise and power.

The work is made using traditional female materials and processes and offers the universal search for relevance in a world that can undervalue older members of society.

This ongoing series of sewn self portraits depict a gradual desire for invisibility, which morphs into a strong passion around climate activism, providing a personal significance in our precarious world.

MATERIAL
Tapestry wools sewn through fine netting stretched over canvas.

The portraits have now been taken off the canvas and are suspended freely with acrylic hangings.

SIZE
All portraits are 130cm x 90cm.

  • Beautiful work Jenni, so full of emotion and expressive too. The lost child symbolism feeling is profound, raising memories of childhood and the emerging person

  • Inspiring, life affirming and very beautiful close up. I love the direct gaze - so often women are looked at, so its powerful to see an older woman doing the defiant looking.

  • I still have vivid memories of the Dementia Darnings, seen about 3 years ago, just after my own mother had died. I have a feeling that the Absurd Sewn Selfies will stay with me too as I journey through my 70’s. Thank you.

  • Totally inspiring and wonderfully defiant. Congratulations Jenni.
